What Makes GAL Vitamin E Complex Different?

In our E-Complex, vitamin E is present as a mixture of natural tocopherols, sourced from non-GMO plant extracts. It contains no soy or other allergens.

The mixed tocopherol blend is dissolved in a high-oleic sunflower oil, cold-pressed from a special sunflower variety with an unusually low omega-6 content, just 1–2%, compared to the usual ~25%. As a result, our product doesn't just help restore a healthy tocopherol ratio, it's also gentle on your omega-3/omega-6 balance.

Most Vitamin E Products Are Incomplete

For a long time, every manufacturer used only alpha-tocopherol as “vitamin E,” and this is still common today. Why is that a problem? Vitamin E has many known forms, alpha, beta, gamma, and delta tocopherols and tocotrienols, and more recently another tocopherol was identified in kiwi skin. In natural foods, alpha-tocopherol occurs alongside its other forms, not alone.

Since alpha-tocopherol is the form that carries vitamin E's defining biological activity, it's technically the only one that can be labeled “vitamin E” on a product (this is a bit more nuanced, but that's the gist). The other tocopherols and tocotrienols are so-called xenobiotics, much like polyphenols, meaning they aren't vitamins in the strict physiological sense, only structurally part of the vitamin E family, yet maintaining their natural ratio is still essential for our health.

Most manufacturers use only alpha-tocopherol as “vitamin E” because it's far more cost-effective, and regulation nudges them in that direction too. In nature, however, alpha-tocopherol never occurs in isolation, always alongside the other tocopherols. This alone hints that taking alpha-tocopherol without the rest isn't how nature intended it, and can even cause problems.

Is Supplementing Vitamin E Really Harmful?

In 2000, the so-called SELECT study found that supplementing vitamin E (as alpha-tocopherol alone, without the other tocopherols) significantly increased the risk of prostate cancer. Yet other, similar studies, such as ATBC, found it significantly reduced that same risk. The difference may lie in the fact that SELECT used an unnaturally high dose, which can itself be a problem for antioxidants, and used only synthetic alpha-tocopherol, further skewing the natural tocopherol ratio. These studies used non-natural forms and non-natural ratios of various vitamins and antioxidants.

Why Does It Matter to Take Mixed Tocopherols?

Confusion around vitamin E often comes from this: taking alpha-tocopherol without the other tocopherols, especially at higher doses, shifts the natural tocopherol ratio in our tissues, raising alpha relative to the others. The reverse is also true: taking a mixed-tocopherol product with a much higher proportion of gamma lowers alpha levels, which is likewise unfavorable.

In one study comparing different ratios of alpha- and gamma-tocopherol supplementation, a ratio close to 1:1 best preserved the favorable tissue ratio, and was also the most effective at reducing inflammation and oxidative stress.

The Tocopherol Ratio in GAL Vitamin E Complex

Taking the available research, practicality, and naturalness into account, the ideal appears to be a product containing 50 international units (about 30mg) of natural d-alpha-tocopherol, since this reliably covers anyone's vitamin E requirement. Alongside it, it's worth supplementing a roughly equal amount of a tocopherol blend rich in gamma-tocopherol, structured so that, by weight, the gamma-tocopherol amount doesn't exceed the alpha-tocopherol amount, but reaches at least a tenth of it.

In other words, 10–40% of total tocopherols should come from gamma-tocopherol, and at least 50–60% from alpha-tocopherol. In our Multivitamin and Vitamin E Complex products, 50–60% of the tocopherols come from alpha-tocopherol, 40–50% from other tocopherols, with gamma-tocopherol making up 20–35% of the total.
